Telegram

Schedule Telegram channel posts. Where attaching an image shrinks your budget fourfold.

Telegram is the one platform in this list where adding media changes your character limit dramatically: a text message gets 4,096 characters, a media caption gets 1,024. Postonus counts against whichever one currently applies rather than the larger of the two.

Two limits, one field

Most platforms have one character budget. Telegram has two, and which one applies depends on whether you attached anything:

Post typeCharacters
Text message4,096
Message with media1,024

The exact values are in the table above, rendered from the rules the publisher enforces.

This is a genuinely annoying trap in tools that only model one limit per platform. You write 3,000 characters, attach an image because the post looks bare, and the publish fails — or worse, the caption is silently truncated. The counter here switches the moment you attach media, so the constraint is visible while you can still act on it.

Bot token, not OAuth

Telegram does not do an OAuth hop for this. You create a bot, make it an admin of your channel, and paste its token.

The practical upsides: it works on a machine with no browser, and revoking is entirely in your hands — regenerate the token or remove the bot and access is gone immediately, whatever Postonus has stored.

A bot posting to your channel appears as the channel, not as a person. That is the normal shape for broadcast channels and it is what the Telegram API supports.

Good company for Discord

Telegram and Discord tend to be the same job — a community that wants the detailed version of an announcement, at the same time as the public post rather than whenever someone remembers. Both are worth putting in the same channel group as your public channels so a launch is one action.

Questions

Frequently asked questions Everything the first evaluation usually needs.

How do I connect Telegram?

With a bot token rather than an OAuth redirect — Telegram issues its own credentials, so Postonus gives you a form. Create a bot, add it to your channel as an admin, and paste the token.

Why did my character limit drop when I attached an image?

Because Telegram gives a plain message 4,096 characters but a media caption only 1,024. The counter switches to the caption limit as soon as you attach media, so you find out while writing rather than at publish time.

Can I schedule to a Telegram group as well as a channel?

The bot needs permission to post wherever you are targeting. Channels are the usual case for broadcast-style publishing.

How do I revoke access?

Revoke or regenerate the bot token in Telegram, or remove the bot from the channel. Either cuts access immediately, independently of Postonus.

Does Telegram support a first comment?

No. First comments are available on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Threads.
